Advice for the Social Media Managers of the Future

Posted by Carla Boyd on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, In : Social Media Career Advice
Article first published on the BIMM blog

I still remember the feeling; passion and drive mixed with dread and anxiety. Entering into the working world can be daunting, especially if – like me – you know what you want to do but you’re not quite sure how to get there.

After some trial and error (in the form of unpaid internships), I discovered my love for copywriting and social media marketing. So when I graduated from university, I decided to pursue a career in social media – a decision ...

Have you ever considered that it’s not just your friends looking at your social media profiles? 93% of recruiters use social media to vet candidates and – more importantly – 55% of recruiters have reconsidered a candidate based on their social media profile.

What’s more, research shows that recruiters make a decision about whether you are a good fit for a job within an average of 6.25 seconds of looking at a CV. If they like...

In fact, the social media job market is fast becoming very competitive. From Community Managers and Bloggers, to Social Media Managers, Strategists and Social Analysts, the amount ofsocial media roles is on the rise but so is the number of candidates.

Why you should have a Portfolio if you work in Social Media

Posted by Carla Boyd on Monday, June 29, 2015, In : Social Media Career Advice

Originally posted on Digital Gurus blog and featured on WeRSM.

Having a portfolio has become norm in the creative industry, however it’s not just designers and photographers who can benefit from having one. Recently, we were asked whether Social Media professionals should have a portfolio. Our answer? Yes!

What is a social media portfolio?

When thinking “portfolio”, most people think of visual work. However, a portfolio is simply “a set of pieces of creative work intended to demonstrate ...

Where has the year gone?

Posted by Carla Boyd on Monday, June 29, 2015,
So it's almost July. Half the year is over. An absolutely crazy fact that stuns me!

I've been very busy at work and even more so in my private life but I hate the fact that I've not been posting to my blog. That's why I decided to share the blogs I've written in a professional capacity. They're also posted on my LinkedIn

The upcoming blogs were written on behalf of my company (Digital Gurus) as guest blogs that were featured on a website called WeRSM. Hope you find them useful! :)

Mr & Mrs Boyd - [Day 21]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Sunday, November 2, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
Day 21 of my #100HappyDays challenge was a very special day indeed. My baby brother got married to the woman he loves, the mother of his children, and the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

I'm not really a wedding person as I'm not sure I believe in the concept of marriage, but even the cynic I am, I couldn't help but tearing a little up during the ceremony because you could feel the love and happiness inside the room as my brother and my now sister-in-law said "I do" in fro...

Leaving on a jetplane - [Day 20]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
I know, I know. It's been ages. But I SHALL be catching up. Starting from where I've left off, Day 20 of my #100HappyDays challenge.

There were many things I was happy about that day. Here are but a few:
  1. Getting a lift to the airport by my sister made the journey infinitely less stressful/more enjoyable.
  2. Flying from a tiny airport (Southend) meant everything was super quick, relaxed, and without queues!
  3. We landed in FMO (Flughafen Münster Osnabrück) which meant no lengthy train journeys to ge...

(Wo)Man vs Machine - [Day 19]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Thursday, October 9, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
Since I've got time right now, I might as well catch up on day 19 of my #100HappyDays challenge. I'm on my way to the airport for my brother's wedding tomorrow and may as well use this time productively.

Yesterday was a very busy day as I tried to do 3 days work in 1. One of the many things I had to do yesterday was check in online and print my boarding pass. Unfortunately I didn't have my passport so couldn't do so at work. Luckily, I had this:

Huge thank you to Joe and Marta for giving me th...

Girls just wanna have fun - [Day 18]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Thursday, October 9, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
I've been having a busy week and it's only going to get busier so this week's post will be late. I'll try and stay on top of things though and will post as and when I have time.

So let's catch up on day 18 of my #100HappyDays challenge. It was a Tuesday, which is really all you need to know about work. After I went to see my friend Emma.

We had a lovely evening, catching up and eating home made vegetarian curry. Thanks for a great time, lovely Emma. I love you lots and I'll see you when I'm b...

Sunrise, looks like mornin' in your eyes - [Day 17]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
So yesterday was day 17 of my #100HappyDays challenge. It was a long and rather exhausting day.

Still, the point of this challenge is to find one good thing about every day. Yesterday, I woke up to this view:

Still, I reckon it's time for those clocks to change...

Today I don't feel like doing anything - [Day 15 & 16]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Monday, October 6, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
I've had a very lazy weekend so day 15 and 16 of my #100HappyDays challenge will be combined.

This weekend, there were 2 things I was happy about. The first one is pizza! A great lazy weekend food. I'm one of those easily pleased people who enjoys just simple cheese pizza.

The second thing that made me happy is my one true love:

All in all a lovely relaxed weekend, which was much needed before a busy week ahead going to Germany for my brother's wedding.

I'm coming out, I want the world to know - [Day 14]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Saturday, October 4, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
So I decided I'll do yesterday today and then do a joint day 15 and 16 post tomorrow because I'm cool like that. ;)

The highlight of day 14 of my #100HappyDays challenge was a lovely evening with Owen and Kirsty that was followed by a night out in Heaven, a gay club in London.

I enjoy going out in gay bars/clubs as it's quite a different experience to a "regular" club. A mixture of new dance music and older cheesy songs makes for a great night of dancing, singing, and general fun.

Making time for me - [Day 13]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Friday, October 3, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
So I didn't write yesterday because I was busy taking care of myself. It was day 13 of my #100HappyDays challenge and I decided to spend some time on myself.

My laptop stayed off as I cleaned my flat, put away my clothes and had some me time. I dyed my hair, did a face mask, and had a long hot shower.

Every once in a while that kind of day is needed. I will write today's day tomorrow as I'm out clubbing tonight! Take care, my dears!

Just gotta be strong - [Day 12]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
It's Day 12 of my #100HappyDays challenge and it wasn't a great day. I am not going to go into detail as to why and it doesn't really matter. But what this challenge does is that it makes you try and find something happy to talk about so I'm having a go.

Today I discovered Will Heard. I really love his voice!! There's a song I've been hearing at work over and over again for weeks but it wasn't until today that I looked him up. There's nothing quite like a great voice and an acoustic guitar. ^_...

It's what you do that defines you. - Batman Begins

So today was day 11 of #100HappyDays and it was another Tuesday. Now we already established I'm not particularly fond of Tuesdays and to be honest, it wasn't the most exciting day. But the highlight of my day was a short trip to Starbucks.

Now for those of you unfamiliar with how Starbucks works, this is what happens: You order your coffee and pay for it, you give them your name, they put your name on the cup and pass it on to a barista, you s...

Sweet like chocolate, you bring me so much joy - [Day 10]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Monday, September 29, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
It's day 10 of my #100HappyDays challenge and today was "one of those days". Mondays aren't exactly the most fun day of the week in general but today specifically wasn't great. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't very "happy".

So what does one do when one doesn't feel very happy? Well, for me, like many people, there's one lovely, sweet, tasty thing that makes life momentarily better. What's that, you ask? Chocolate of course!

Of course chocolate doesn't make EVERYTHING better. But if you're j...

We're all stories, in the end. Just make it a good one. - [Day 9]

Day 9 of #100HappyDays - It's been a long day that wasn't quite long enough. Lazy Sundays are lovely on the one hand but on the other you always feel like you didn't accomplish anything...

But in any case, the highlight of my day was catching up on the new episode of Doctor Who! I love the show. I know some people think of it as either a show just for children or a very geeky show. But I find Doctor Who teaches a lot about relationships, human interaction, love, war, peace, and more.

So I'm late with this as I was out late but I shall simply do tomorrow now and today this evening.

On day 8 of my #100HappyDays challenge, realising what I was happy about was easy: My friends! I have 7 minutes to write and post this blog on time so I better make this a quick one. It's day 7 of #100HappyDays!

Today was a bit of a weird one. Good weird, but weird. I won't give much more details than that but looking back there was one person who yet again made today happy. The same person who manages to make every day happy.

I'm tired to the point of my eyes tearing up but I'm determined to not miss a day of the #100HappyDays challenge! But today will be a short one...

I had a thought about what made me happy today and I realised there is one thing that has continuously brought a smile to my face for years now. It's the little things... - [Day 4]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
Tuesdays are genuinely my least favourite day of the week. Monday tends to go by rather quickly due to catching up with the weekend, Wednesday is hump day, Thursday is almost Friday, and, well, Friday is almost the weekend. Tuesday, however, is that awkward day in between.

So today, it was a bit more difficult to think of a moment that made me happy. Of course there was one, and if I thought about it more thoroughly, there was probably multiple. However, I've picked one for the purpose of my ...

Mama Mia: Yorkshire kid telling his Mother he's arrived - [Day 3]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Monday, September 22, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
So it was my first day at work during this #100HappyDays challenge and it's definitely a bit more difficult to be happy when you're stuck at work all day...

Fortunately, what happens when you have to concentrate on what makes you happy is that you realise what you've really got. Every day, work is made much happier if you have great colleagues and while there are many people at my office that I like, there are two special weirdos that I've befriended recently. They have become outside-of-work...

There's no one in the world like Emily - [Day 2]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Sunday, September 21, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
So it's day 2 of my #100HappyDays challenge and I've had a pretty good day. It's funny - when you know you have to write about something you were happy about, you start realising all the little things that make you happy.

Still, there was one clear highlight today and that was when my little niece recognised me on webcam during a Skype talk with my brother and said "Hallo Carla".

When Emily was first born, I was adamant that I wanted to be an important part of her life. Unfortunately time mov...

Clap along if you know what happiness is to you - [Day 1]

Posted by Carla Boyd on Saturday, September 20, 2014, In : 100 Happy Days
Recently, I've been doing a lot of thinking about my life and what I want for myself. My life isn't perfect. I'm not perfect. But the more time I spent thinking about things, the more I realised that I'm actually quite happy. I know what I want and I'm working towards my goals. I have a supportive family, amazing friends in different parts of the world, and my very own space in one of the most exciting cities in the world!

Still, while I know all this, sometimes I need a bit of reminding. That...

It's a very difficult era in which to be a person

Posted by Carla Boyd on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, In : Movies

I read a book recently called Gone Girl. Actually found out after I finished reading it that they're making it into a movie and I'm quite excited to watch it. It's a book about a man whose wife goes missing and he gets suspected of murdering her. The book comes in three parts, explaining different phases of before, during, and after. I won't go into more details because I feel that would ruin it and I'm pleased to see that the trailer avoids any spoilers as well. I find nothing worse than a m...

We get along for the most part, me and reality

Posted by Carla Boyd on Sunday, June 1, 2014, In : Music-related blogs
We get along for the most part
Me and reality, the light and the dark
We live alone, two different worlds
Me in a fantasy, you in your memories
But we get along

I can't believe it's been almost a year since I've last written on here. Last year, there was a time where I had nothing much to say. There was a lot of job hunting, interviews, call backs, and disappointment when things didn't work out.

Finally, in September last year, after the latest very promising second interview for a job I ultimately...

And at the same time something makes you whole.

It's like when you've been crying
And you're empty and you're full.

Something's lost but something's gained in living every day.

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall.
I really don't know life at all.

I’ve tried very hard recently. Very hard. But I can’t seem to figure it out. What’s the point? And I don’t mean this in a dismissive, rhetoric question kind of way, but genuinely. What is the point. Of life. Of existing. Of me. This may sound depressing. It’s not meant to be. Just currently I’m still at the ‘in between’ phase. I haven’...

I suppose I could fold up into my self, quite safe, and wait for these pieces to fall into place.
But not today.

The most recent realisation that I'm about to join the "grown-up" world now that I'm officially done being a student has made me rather nostalgic lately. And while I've been looking back at the last 23 years, it struck me just how lucky I have been.
